La Befana is the Italian Christmas Witch who visits children on Epiphany to deliver treats.

Tradition dictates that every year, on the day of the Epiphany, a new trouble-repelling broom is hung in the house, near the entrance, as a symbol of good luck for the new year, to symbolically "sweep" trouble and keep it away.
