In the Ryals Room, on the fourth floor of Rawlings, we'll be watching GATTACA, the oft-overlooked but impressive 1996 science fiction movie starring Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman. Popcorn provided.
Gattaca is a dystopian film imagining a future wherein every person's life, primarily their profession and ability to travel, is determined by their genetic code. Each person is born either a "valid" or an "in-valid" based on the determinations about their genetic makeup as it stored in a vast registry. Ethan Hawke plays Vincent Freeman, a genetic in-valid, who steals the genetic information and identity of a valid in order to engage in space travel for the company named Gattaca. The film tells the increasingly complex story of his desperate attempt not to be found out, and his romance with valid co-worker Irene.
