Cold Forging

Join Catie in learning the art of cold forging brass into fun new shapes! For ages 12 and up, people under 18 MUST be accompanied by a Parent or Guardian. Registration Required.

Cold forging is the craft of forming metal with hammering, stamping, doming, dapping, and more while the metal is cold. We will be cold forging brass as brass cracks when you try to forge it hot, making it perfect for working it cold. The brass will work-harden as you work with it, so we will also have tools on hand for annealing it back to dead-soft so we can continue to work the metal. Brass stamping blanks will be provided for this activity.

We will be working with hammers and other heavy equipment, as such, we will do our best to put safety first and we ask the same of all who participate in this event. Please come wearing long pants and closed-toed shoes [protective clothing] as metal may be hot and/or sharp and a layer between you and a falling piece of metal is a good first defense. Be sure to follow all instructions and don't be afraid to ask for help from the instructor. We will provide safety glasses and ear plugs for this activity, but you are welcome to bring your own PPE as long as it will meet the protective needs of the activity. You will be asked to sign a waiver at the event to participate in the activity. If you find yourself unable to attend, please cancel your registration and contact the library to let us know rather than taking a slot from someone who would be able to attend.
